Sumitomo now offers the binderless CBN grade NCB100 for precise and economical machining of extremely hard materials - titanium alloys, cobalt-chrome, cermets and carbide metals. With this cutting material, the particles with dimensions in the nanometre range bond directly without a binder simply by pressing the cutting inserts. Binderless CBN is harder and has better thermal conductivity than conventional CBN cutting materials. Tools with cutting edges made from binderless CBN can work more productively at higher cutting and feed speeds. They also achieve longer tool life, especially when machining difficult-to-cut materials such as cobalt-chromium alloys, titanium alloys Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-5Al-5V-5Mo-3Cr, carbides and cermets. These CBN grades are therefore ideal for the efficient production of components in medical technology and the aerospace industry. In many cases, they can be used to replace time-consuming grinding with HSC hard turning.
